Senior Hardware Design Engineer

Role Description

Lead the design and development of utility-grade hardware solutions. You will design and develop robust, utility‑grade hardware platforms for use-cases including but not limited to Smart Metering Data Concentrators, Gateways, and Edge devices. These products operate in demanding field environments and must meet stringent performance, reliability, and regulatory requirements. The role spans the full hardware lifecycle—from concept and schematic design through industrialization, homologation, and volume production.

This position is ideal for an engineer who thrives on end‑to‑end ownership, cross‑functional collaboration, and a flair for engineering excellence.

Key Responsibilities

  • Lead and execute hardware development lifecycle, from initial requirements to volume production
  • Design complex electronic circuits for industrial environments ensuring signal integrity, EMC, insulation coordination and thermal management
  • Perform rigorous hands-on testing, debugging and validation of prototypes
  • Lead Product Industrialization Process, collaborating with manufacturing partners to develop DFM (Design for Manufacturing) and DFT (Design for Test) guidelines.
  • Support the transition from prototype to high-volume production, including defining production test setups in cooperation with software team.
  • Manage the homologation process to meet international standards (IEC, IEEE, UL).
  • Oversee EMC/EMI testing and mitigation, electrical safety certifications, and environmental stress testing (shock, vibration, temperature).
  • Coordinate with procurement teams to manage component sourcing, identifying long-lead items and qualifying second-source alternatives to mitigate risk.
  • Maintain vendor relationships to ensure part quality and availability throughout product lifecycle.
  • Provide technical expertise during customer acceptance tests and field trials.

Qualifications

  • 10+ years of hands-on experience in hardware engineering, specifically within the utility, power, or ruggedized industrial sectors.
  • Proven track record of taking multiple products from concept through industrialization and into global markets.
  • Knowledge of embedded systems, microcontrollers, and SoC‑based architectures.
  • Solid understanding of EMC design principles, safety standards, and homologation process.
  • Experience in any of the following will be considered additional plus:
  • Familiarity with utility-grade standards
  • Experience with RF communication
  • Experience with Smart Metering, Data Concentrators, Gateways, or other LV Smart Grid devices.
  • Familiarity with communication interfaces and protocols commonly used in smart grid or industrial systems (e.g., RS‑485, Ethernet, PLC, cellular, IoT stacks).

Technical Skills

  • Expertise in EDA tools (e.g., Altium Designer)
  • Background in software development for the purpose of scripting and test automation (e.g., Python).
  • Experience with high-speed digital design, analog sensing, and power electronics.

Soft Skills

  • Strong project management skills with the ability to coordinate across cross-functional teams (Firmware, Mechanical, Supply Chain).
  • Exceptional communication skills for interfacing with stakeholders and end-customers.
